Milford Sound: Where the Mountains Meet the Sea
The 8th Wonder of the World
A long drive through Fiordland ends at Milford Sound. Sheer cliffs, cold water, and waterfalls falling straight into the sea. Some places feel too big for a photo. I tried anyway.
“Mitre Peak, standing still”
The road to Milford Sound is part of the story. From Te Anau, it is about two hours of mountains, valleys, and stops you did not plan. Every corner looks like a postcard. I kept pulling over.
Then the Homer Tunnel. Dark, narrow, and long. On the other side, the walls of the valley rise straight up. Waterfalls run down the rock from every direction.
“The road in is half the trip”
Milford Sound is quiet in a heavy way. The water is dark and still. Mitre Peak rises out of it, close to 1,700 metres from the sea. It looks unreal, even when you are standing right there.
[On the cruise / On the foreshore], the scale hit me. The boat felt tiny. We drifted past Stirling Falls and got close enough to feel the spray. Seals rested on the rocks. The cold air smelled like rain and salt.
“Falls you hear before you see”
